Classes at the NKC
The NKC offers an array of classes throughout the year. See below for information on the classes we offer. Please note that selection varies by term, interest and instructor availability. Classes are typically offered in the Fall, Winter and Spring. Please see our main page for updates on which classes are being offered or email nkcboard@gmail.com
Conformation (beginners and advanced): Conformation is often offered at the NKC. This is a class which focuses on preparing dog and handler for the Conformation or dog show ring. Topics of interest include preparing your dog for judge examination, gaiting and free stacking.
Obedience: Obedience trials were a way to demonstrate a dog's ability to be a companion to its family. In NKC obedience classes, dogs are taught to sit, lay down, and recall. Later stages include retrieving , jumping and responding to hand signals. Trials for this sport are also offered several times a year during our Conformation dog shows.
Rally Obedience: Rally is described by the CKC as a companion sport to obedience. It allows both handler and dog to work together to show their competency in a series of obedience exercises.
Junior Handling: Junior handling is aimed at children who would like build a relationship with their dog and learn how to handle in the show ring. Our juniors are often found helping other exhibitors during our local dog shows and we couldn't be more proud of them! This class is offered as two sections - Pee wee (ages 4-7 and up) and also ages 8 and up.
CGN: The Canine Good Neighbor program is a 12 step test involving a handler and dog showing their ability to be good canine neighbors. Tests include everything from accepting attention from a stranger, walking through a crowd, staying in one place and reactions to other dogs and distractions.
Puppy Socialization/Engagement: In the past the NKC has offered puppy socialization and engagement class which, similar to obedience, teach proper manners and play to young dogs. Other topics include teaching them to sit, stay and lay down.
